50 Cent – Power of the Dollar, Guess Who’s Back?, 50 Cent is the Future, No Mercy, No Fear & Gods Plan

04/25/2009

I thought that I should briefly shed some light on the classic 50 Cent albums and mixtapes that many had forgotten. I believe they deserve to be mentioned because in all honesty, they are the single most important mixtapes that had sparked G-Unit’s success, let alone 50 Cent. Many people have personal decisions that are constantly changing concerning artists and their success in the music industry. By saying that I mean the “come up” of an artist aside from their success and the image that themselves or the media portrays them as, prior to having success. With that said, I prefer listening to these specific albums/mixtapes that I will be mentioning, rather than the albums that have been released around 2004 and onwards.

The music that 50 was creating in and around 1998-2002 was thorough and struck the community hard. If you didn’t know who 50 was during this time, you quickly found out. 50’s first album, Power of the Dollar, was expected to release September 12, 2000 but ended up debuting as an EP rather than an LP. 50 cent was signed to Columbia records at the time, later to be dropped due to being shot 9 times. Never the less this is still considered an album, and being referred to as an EP rather than an LP just means that there is limited time allowed on the actual recording of the album. allmusic.com describes the album as the following,

“Penetrating wit and funk-infused beats, accompanied by grand orchestrations of commanding horns, pronounced percussion, and various string elements”.

I would describe Power of the Dollar as being the foundation for G-units later to be released mixtapes. It’s simply a classic, favored by many people undoubtedly to this day. The enthusiasm and style presented is unique and widely accepted.

It would be wrong for me not to include 50’s 2002 Compilation “Guess Who’s Back?” simply because I’ve spent more time listening to this album more than Power of the Dollar. I was surprised by this artist’s delivery at the time; you were able to sense the intensity that everyone else was noticing after listening. Guess Who’s Back is the album that struck my interest the most, it was also his first “legit” album released.
